August 31, 2005: For more than a century an elaborate system of the levees and canals had kept the city of New Orleans, much of which exists below the water level around it, dry and functioning. John Rennie, the editor of Scientific American magazine, discusses the breaches in the levee system that unleashed a deluge of water and flooded the city.
