Besides those who lost loved ones, Katrina can be taken as a push to something better. Yes, it was horrible to lose all our photos and records, but everything else was just material. A great many had the opportunity to start anew in a different city with a different attitude.
And let's not act as if New Orleans was a utopia before the storm. Besides the actual number in population, and the blighted properties, this city is just the same: an eyesore. The beautiful parts of the city, the food, music, culture, are still here, but what also returned after the storm was the same old corrupt, do-nothing politics, corrupt police department, and so on.
I don't feel anything when thinking about Katrina, except irritation. It's 2010. This is New Orleans. What do you expect?
