I teach Psychology at the University of New Orleans and live in Metairie. We used to spend as much time as possible in Pass Christian, MS, now decimated.\r\n Our evacuations included 3 different moves from north Louisiana to Houma. At the last stop, there were 4 generations and 12 of us in a 2-bedroom apartment. When we returned home 3 weeks after Katrina, all of us had evacuation sniffles. 2 weeks later, 1 of our daughters developed Guillain-Barre\' Syndrome, became paralyzed, and had to be hospitalized for over 5 weeks. \r\n One of our sons and his family lost everything in Lake Terrace and have permanently relocated in Nashville, TN. A Northshore daughter was spared but is planning to relocate her family anyway rather than wait for the next hurricane. 2 of our sons are UNO seniors and have had to delay graduation.\r\n I worry about my 900 students, knowing that many of them endured horrific experiences, and some were so far from home and the comfort of family.\r\n But there were some very bright spots during this nightmare of Katrina\'s aftermath---our oldest son returned safely from Kuwait, and we welcomed our 13th grandbaby Brooke Sara into the world.\r\n Life indeed does go on!!
